People power has brought about a partial victory for residents battling plans for six wind turbines on the site of the Farington Waste Technology plant.
Controversial proposals for a £120,000 scheme to put 15m high wind turbines as part of the education centre have now been approved.
However, after angry residents branded the scheme 'the straw that will break the camel's back', joint developers Lancashire County Council and Global Renewables have agreed to reduce the number of turbines to three.
A statement from LCC and Global Renewables said: "Following concerns expressed by residents at the Community Liaison Group meeting, markers were erected on-site detailing the positions and heights of the proposed wind turbines in order that their visual impact could be effectively demonstrated to residents.
"The conclusion was that their impact was minimal. However, in response to the earlier concerns expressed by residents, the council gave a commitment not to construct three of the turbines that would be visible from the bedroom windows of some properties."
Although Lancashire County Council has already approved the original plans for a six-strong windfarm, it has made a verbal promise to reduce the amount by half.
