Prisoner charged with attempted murder

A man been charged with attempting to murder a fellow inmate at a Leyland prison.
David Smith, 27, originally from Cambridge, is currently serving time at HMP Garth.

He appeared at Chorley Magistrates' Court charged with attempting to murder a fellow inmate at the prison on March 21, last year.

Smith, who has a long beard and is balding, wore a striped T-shirt and black and a red tracksuit top during his appearance.

He did not speak during the proceedings but his legal representative said he planned to plead not guilty to the charge.

The case was sent to Preston Crown Court and a next appearance is scheduled for April 19.
