A popular horse-riding route is to be renamed in honour of a Leyland girl who died while visiting the dentist.
Ulnes Walton Bridleways Association will be unveiling a plaque naming the Moss Side path 'Karla Selley Way'.

The equestrian enthusiasts are holding a Christmas ride on December 21 as part of the special day in memory of the five-year-old.

The association's members, who include Karla's mum Tracey Armstrong and her friend Sandra Connolly, will set off from Paul's Farm on Dunkirk Lane with around 30 horses and ponies decorated with tinsel.

The money for the plaque came from a fundraising night held at Park Hall, Charnock Richard, in Karla's memory, and in tribute to her grandmother, Sandra Gibson, who died in July.

Sandra said: "As a result of the generous donations, we were able to give £1,000 to St Catherine's Hospice, where Karla's grandmother spent her last few weeks.

"The rest went to the Ulnes Walton Bridleways Association for the plaque. I want to thank everyone who gave money and all those who participated, including the Green Monkeys, Lana Williams and Marvyn Williams for the fantastic entertainment."

Sandra and her daughter Haylea Ostranica, 24, have helped organise the Christmas ride and say Karla's mum is 'chuffed to bits' at the idea.

Sandra added: "Karla's sister Nicola is a keen rider and she will be taking part. It will be a proud moment for her to see it named after her big sister. It will be nice for her as she gets older.

"We're hoping that all the local people and riders will come to know the bridleway as Karla Selley Way.

Sue Taylor-Green, chairman of the bridleway association, which has around 150 members, said: "We're pleased to get involved. Tracey is very involved with horses and Karla loved horses too.

"We're happy to name the path after her as it doesn't really have a name at the moment.

"We normally have a Christmas event, so it is nice to have a slight change and hopefully the naming of the path will make more people aware of it and bring a bit of goodwill for Christmas."

In June 2006, the association achieved a four-year ambition by opening the £25,000 path.

Karla stopped breathing while under sedation to remove a milk tooth at Towngate Dental Practice on August 9, 1999.
