LEYLAND'S oldest building is on the market – with a price tag of £330,000.
Charnock Old Hall, at 131 Balcarres Road, dates back to the early 14th century and even boasts a secret door to the attic.
Research suggests the Grade II listed building is the oldest in Leyland – although rumours that it could be haunted appear to
be wide of the mark.
Brian Pilkington estate agents is marketing the three-bedroom property and boss Helen Pilkington admitted it was attracting a lot of interest.
She said: "This type of property doesn't suit everyone, because of the age and the quirkiness of it.
"There are lots of original features, as well as modern facilities such as gas central heating.
"The secret door which leads to an attic room is already proving popular, especially with some of the children that have come with their family to look at the house."
Leyland historian and author Bill Wareing has researched the history of the site.
He said: "Early records from the town's history books show that the first owner of the house was the Blacklatche family, who later became the Blackledge family, who had the house until the 17th century.
"Eventually it was bought by the Charnock family, who lived in the Fox Lane area, but were originally from Charnock Richard.
"It was in the Charnock family until the death of the last family member who was a priest.
"He tried to ensure that the house stayed in Catholic hands, but there was no legal way he could have done it at the time."
The building was the subject of a court case where it became property of the Crown, but the local people in the town pressed for it to be passed on to the vicar of Leyland.
Mr Wareing said: "It was given to the vicar of Leyland until the end of the last century, when it was sold to Leyland Motors, who let the property out as a farm building."
Rumours of ghosts haunting the house and tunnels leading to other parts of Leyland are not true according to Mr Wareing, who said: "Stories of tunnels exist all over the country, but I don't believe them to be true in this case.
"As for ghosts, I think certain stories develop over time and certain rumours were put out to stop unwanted visitors."
The house is still in very good condition and has a lot of original features including a secret passageway which leads to an attic room.
