NEew Chorley Mayor Iris Smith has issued an open invite to the residents of the borough to attend one of the biggest events of the year.
On Sunday June 28, the newly-refurbished Astley Park will play host to the completely free Chorley Smile Picnic in the Park.

Hundreds and possibly thousands of people are expected to attend the event, which runs between midday and 6pm.

A series of activities have been arranged, including a visit by popular cartoon character Peppa Pig.

Visitors will also be able to have a look round Astley Hall, the refurbished Coach House and the park.

Coun Smith said: "I think Picnic in the Park is a fantastic way of getting people into this wonderful attraction and making people aware of all the good things that have going on in Astley Park.

"It's a beautiful attraction and everyone in Chorley is incredibly proud of it.

"A lot of work has been going on in Astley Park and it will be wonderful if people can come along and see it all for themselves. There are some beautiful views and scenes.

"It's the jewel in the crown for Chorley and now it's starting to sparkle. Somebody from Australia recently told me me it was 'world class' and that's a great tribute."

Coun Smith said the fact that the whole day was free should swell the numbers.

"In the current economic climate it's tough," she said. "That's why it is wonderful to have a free event like this.

"I hope as many as people as possible with bring their sandwiches and picnics on Sunday. It's really created a feel-good factor.
"There's something for anybody.

"We've just got our fingers crossed that the weather is good and that people remember their sun cream."
