As the old saying goes, laughter is the best medicine — and Chorley funnyman Dave Spikey is it giving it out by the spoonful!
Dave, better known to many as Jerry St Clair in the TV series Phoenix Nights, will return to the town this week for a rare local appearance.

The award-winning comic, who is on the last leg of his sell-out tour, is hoping to draw in the crowds to Malcolm's Musicland, in Chapel Street, for a DVD signing on December 5.

The DVD is taken from his Best Medicine tour and it hit the shelves in November.

It has been followed by the release of his first book, He Took My Kidney Then Broke My Heart, which is also proving extremely popular.

Speaking from his Chorley home, he said: "The tour has taken me to more than 100 venues across the UK and I've absolutely loved it.

"It's involved a lot of travelling, but I managed to break it up into three chunks. It's great to get out there and be able to see the audiences laughing along."

The new DVD is the third that Dave has released and he admitted that scenes from it were inspired by shopping visits to Chorley.

"Some of the material I use actually came from when I was on Chorley Market," he said. "I overheard a conversation and thought it was hilarious.

"It was about a woman who had given birth and had called her son Marc.

The lady said 'well you can't go too wrong with Marc' and her friend replied 'yes, but she's being snooty and spelling it with a C'.

"The other said 'what, Carc?'. I take a lot of my material from everyday life as it is a comedy.

"Many comedians now feel like they have to challenge the boundaries, but I just take material from things that happen in everyday life.

I have notebooks upon notebooks of things that I've seen or heard."

Dave has also taken inspiration from his time working as a bio medic at Bolton General Hospital and drawn on his own experiences of being a patient to make the DVD his best yet. Speaking about his signing, he added: "It is always good to come home.

"It's like playing a home match – you have to be really on top of your game.

"It was good to perform the stand-up in Chorley too, as I could bring in names of churches and buildings that people can relate to and make local references."

The DVD has received rave reviews and has been endorsed by Dave's Eight Out Of Ten Cats co-stars, Jimmy Carr and Lee Mack.
